Fair Trading Minister Margaret Keech today announced the winners of the Beattie Government's inaugural Queensland Consumer Protection Awards.
Mrs Keech congratulated all winners, commending them on their outstanding efforts to protect Queensland consumers.
"The awards are a highlight of Queensland Consumer Protection Week (11-15 April 2005)," she said.
"They were initiated to acknowledge the work of those who often work hard behind the scenes to advance consumer protections.
"The response in this first year was pleasing, and the quality of nominations high."
Mrs Keech paid special tribute to Queensland's Consumer Law Advice Clinic by announcing it the winner of the Minister's Award for Excellence in Consumer Protection.
"This Award recognises exceptional consumer protection, promotion, education or advocacy," Mrs Keech said.
"The Clinic is a joint consumer advocacy initiative of the Consumer Public Interest Law Clearing House (QPILCH) and the University of Queensland Law School, with support from Clayton Utz Lawyers.
"The Law Clinic has been operating since August 2004, and provides free legal assistance and advice for people with problems relating to consumer credit, debt, consumer credit insurance and related legal transactions.
"Many of these issues are also key areas of focus for the Office of Fair Trading, and community support from bodies such as the Consumer Law Advice Centre goes a long way to helping us protect Queensland consumers."
Mrs Keech presented the TradeSmart Award for achievement by a Queensland business, company or professional/industry association in promoting consumer protection and best fair trading practice to MiniMovers.
North Queensland's Indigenous Consumer Assistance Network (ICAN) won the Consumer Advocacy Award for achievement in promoting consumer protection and fair trading outcomes by an individual, non-government or community organisation.
Channel 9's Brisbane Extra program was presented the Public Awareness Media Award for its work in educating and informing consumers.
Mrs Keech presented winners with a $1500 cash prize and certificate at a special ceremony at Parliament House today. The Consumer Law Advice Clinic also received an excellence trophy.
"When I initiated these awards, my aim was to recognise the tireless work of consumer advocates and businesses who help make consumer protection a reality and enhance the spirit of fair trading," she said.
"I commend all nominees for their efforts and urge them to continue implementing their fantastic initiatives and practices."
