The Move to Brisbane
Moving from interstate or overseas is a big move and usually entails relocating not just yourself, your family and your pets but also most of your worldly possessions. One thing to consider is selling your house. Real Estate agents are probably your best contacts for tips on selling house and moving out state. Moving itself can mean a lot of stuff to pack and ship. You look around your home and think "How am I going to get all of this stuff from here to Brisbane?" "Where do I start?" "What should I leave behind?" "How much is it going to cost?" and so forth.

This is where your moving company comes in. A professional moving company will have the experience and knowledge to guide you through relocation, providing you with information on packing, paperwork, insurance and other tasks. To help your move as pain-free as possible, here are some invaluable tips:

1. Preparation is Key

The first thing to do is to gather as much information as possible about Brisbane. Understanding your new home can help you make informed decisions when you are packing. Ideally, you should schedule a two or three day visit to Brisbane to get a first-hand feel of what life here is like, what it looks like, smalls like, feels like.

2. Choose Your Movers

Choosing a good and reliable moving company may be one of the more important decisions you have to make prior to your move to Brisbane. After all, you don't want to arrive in Brisbane to find boxes of broken vases and crockery, or eben worse, things missing. Choose an experienced mover with a good track record for shipping items interstate and/or overseas and find out about all the costs involved. Ideally, get quotations from different companies (at least three). Included in the costs are customs fees, insurance costs, special packaging fees to name a few. After all, you don't want to be surprised by the size of the bill at the end of your move. Before arriving at a quote you may need to identify what goes with you and what is given away or sold as quotes from movers tend to convert your possessions into cubic metres. Once you have chosen a company you are happy with, it's time to plan your attack...

3. Planning Your Move

The quotes from movers tend to convert your possessions into cubic metres. The key is volume, rather than weight, so find as many ways of reducing volume as you can such as putting one item inside another if it will fit. Decide what should be shipped to Brisbane, what should be stored, and what should be sold or given away. Then, together with the moving company, you should decide on what items are absolutely essential and need to be air-shipped, which are less important and can arrive later by sea shipment, and which are to go into storage. Be clear about any special handling needs for items like valuables and glassware. It doesn't matter what you want to take - your shipping agent can look after it for you and advise how to go about it. About the only thing these big companies probably don't do is ship live animals.

Special Considerations:

  • Do your children have any special needs that need to be considered when packing?
  • If shipping your pets to your new home make sure that you know what the health and export regulations are concerning pets
  • You may want to make special arrangements for valuables such as jewelry, heirlooms, and stock and bonds. Alternatively, you may want to carry them with you on the flight
  • Antiques and other breakables need to be specially packed
  • Items that may be damaged by moisture should be packed with silica gel

4. On the Day of Your Move

It helps to be present during the big move. Don't leave everything to the workers and assume that they care about your stuff as much as you do. You should keep copies of all relevant documentation and have a record of what is packed and where. You may also want to devise your own system of identification on the boxes. The manifest description should be checked and double-checked to make sure that it tallies with the packed items.

5. After the Move

You've made it, you're at your new home and your belongings have arrived in one piece. Remember that your moving company will do the unpacking for you so all you have to do is to be there when your stuff arrives and tell them where you want everything to go. Make sure you check that everything is in order and if there is anything missing or broken, tell the moving company straight away.
